Apple today released a Security Update that fixes a problem recently identified with Samba, an open-source file and print sharing technology that enables Macs to work more seamlessly with Windows computers on networks. While the technology is turned off by default in Mac OS X, this update addresses a problem that could allow remote access to the host system if Samba is turned on.

Also updated is OpenSSL, technology which provides support for Secure Sockets Layer (SSL). The new OpenSSL update fixes a problem in which RSA private keys can be compromised when communicating over LANs, Internet2/Abilene and interprocess communication on local machines, according to Apple.

The new security update, dated 2003-03-24, is ready for download through the Software Update system preference pane. Apple recommends that all users apply the update
