I am purchasing a 250gb External HDD to back my work from my Mac up on.

Are all of them just Plug and Play like they are on Windows OS' or is it more complicated?

Also, (software related) what is the best program to use to do scheduled backups of the data from my iMac to the External Hard Drive?

All hard drives are essentially the same, you just need to format it to HFS+ if you plan on using it only for Macs, but if you intend on using it with Windows, too, you need to format it to MSDOS (FAT32).

I would recommend Deja Vu (search for it) for doing backups.

Thanks surfwax - does this mean that if I format it to MSDOS (FAT32) I can work on both Windows and Mac then store files on the HDD and they'll work on both OS'. (IE: If I do a PSD file on Windows I'll be able to save it into the MSDOS (FAT32) formatted HDD and put it onto my Mac and open it?)
