Hello,

My hallmate's powerbook recently started going on the fritz. I'm unsure what exactly the symptoms were, but he took it to the apple store and they said that it may be the hd. So he's tried to install the same hd twice, which was reformatted and erased using disk utility through my mb pro. Problem is when he boots up holding the "c" key and the boot cd, and goes to install mac os x, the hard drive doesn't appear. What could be the cause of the hard drive not appearing durin os x installation??

Thanks,
A.J.

How did you format the harddrive with your macbook pro?

Intel macs use a different type of boot record than powerpc macs.

Make sure you select 'erase' and then the partition scheme that is required for powerpc macs to be able to boot from that partition.

Alternatively, if he selects the disk utility from 'tools->disk utility' in the menu bar during installation, he should be able to reformat the entire volume again.

That is the problem. When he runs disk utility his hd doesn't show up in it. He formatted it by erasing it and selecting mac os extended journaled.

Well then try this:

Restart his powerbook and at the chime press & hold the 'T' button.
Then connect his powerbook to your macbook with a firewire to firewire cable. You might be able to access and format it that way.
