sound problems - headphones

I purchased a MacBook this summer and when I plug in my headphones, no sound comes out and the computer speakers remain on. I can not figure out the problem. Any ideas?

try turning up the volume and turning the mute on or off

This might seem a little silly....but, are you sure you are plugging them into the headphone jack and not the line in jack?

....have you tried another headphone set, or tried the 'phones somewhere else just to eliminate them out of the frame.....
