I've made the switch from desktop pc to macbook within the past couple of days, and am in the process of moving my focus to the macbook as I'm so delighted with it.
Currently, I am running my iPod through my PC, which has the library pointed to an external USB drive containing around 80Gb of mp3s. My iPod is 40Gb, so I only ever place 40Gb of mp3s in the iTunes library at any one time. I'd like to now sync my iPod through the MacBook, but don't want to fill my measly 60Gb MacBook drive up with 40Gb of mp3s! Is there a way, therefore, for me to keep the mp3s on the external drive hooked up to my pc and simply reference them from the iTunes library on my MacBook? Will this take a much longer time to sync, since the files will be transferring over the network?
I'm pretty confident this is possible, as this is the way that I have it configured on my pc. The trickier part is this ...
When I'm away from home I would like to be able to access a subset of my iTunes library (perhaps around 10Gb worth). I can hear you saying 'why not just listen to your iPod!' but I'd rather have it play on the MacBook when using it to work. Is there any way known to sync only the albums which I would like to have on the MacBook so that they are there offline? Alernatively, if I hook the iPod up to my MacBook when on the road, can I simply play the files from the iPod through the MacBook even though the mp3s don't exist on the MacBook drive? This would by far be the best approach, but I'm not sure if Apple permit it.
Any advice for a new switcher appreciated!
