Locked Files in Trash

i have a 733 G4 at home with a bunch of stuff in my trash that wont delete. every time i empty trash, it says all the files are Locked or In Use. but they are not In Use. also, i cant drag them out of the trash either. these files are eating up a bunch of HD space. any thoughts?
