I mean not to be rude or anything, but if you really want to use a opensource/free fully integrated 3d making tool, then use blender for crying out loud. If you read about it then you will see that it is currently the fastes growing, and one if not the best free/open source 3d program/tool. There are so many exstensions to it that if you heard about programs like zbrush to add more details to your object/meshes then there is more then enough program exctensions to blender for that. And what´s more, the size of the program is no more then about 10mb... and still has lot of things like 3dmax,zbrush and maya has... you should really check it out..

I really hope that those who want to use a free/opensource 3d program chooses blender, because it really is a great tool.

and if you need tutorials for it, then either check out greybeards tutorials (can be found by looking through the blender homepage) or google this "noob to pro" and read the wiki documentation.
