My friend ordered a new 100 gig drive for his laptop, and he doesn't know what to do with the 40 gig. He offered to just give it to me, but I don't know if it will work.

I have an iBook G3 500MHZ, 10 gig drive. Its the original 10 gig; are iBook G3s SATA or ATA-6? The drive my friend is giving me is ATA-6, so can I put it in my iBook or will I have to get a SATA drive?

Your current hard drive is ATA. The new one should work.

SATA in laptops is a fairly new thing.

Thanks! For some reason my friend told me mine was SATA. Maybe he was thinking of the MacBook, since he wants one so bad.
