Well I like having the doc auto-hide for more screen space, but it's a pain to have to move my mouse down there every time I want to look at the dock or something like that. Is there a shortcut key to bring it up? I'm crossing my f ingers as I've never heard of this.

i.e, if someone IM's me in adium their name flashes on the dock, it would be useful to be able to hit like apple+something to bring the dock back up to see who it is withotu having to apple+tab to the window.

Well you could always use Command+Option+D.
That is the command to hide or unhide the Dock.
