If you deleted it, then you deleted it. Its gone.
A good number of those "recovery" apps simply keep a highly compressed copy of all of your files. That way even after you put it in the trash and empty it, you don't really delete it. That way when you run the app, it magically "restores" the file you "deleted". That being said, if you install those apps after you have already deleted something, then you are out of luck because the application never had the chance to make the copy first.

I don't know how long after he deleted it he realized that he needed it, but I wish they would've put a confirmation dialog when you go to empty the trash. It's annoying when you want to delete stuff, but it has saved me many times in Windows. That being said, this adds nothing to the thread, but it's semi-revelant.

There is a confirmation dialog window that pops up when you empty the trash.

I don't get one for some reason

Are your emptying the trash by ctrl clicking/right clicking on the trash icon and hitting empty trash? If so then the actually clicking and selecting required by that should be more than enough warning for you. You only get the confirmation message if you use the keyboard shortcut or select it from the finder menu

Not really, there is a secure empty trash option for a reason, because regular empty trash doesn't really delete the item from your hard drive. When you delete if just allows that space to be overwritten with new data, but if you haven't written anything, that file should still be there. Check trpnmonkey41's link.

Oh, I see. I keep the button down over the trash, which is just like control+clicking, i guess, and do it that way. I'm just used to the confirmation dialog in Windows when i right click on the recycle bin and click empty. At least I now know why it doesn't give me one, though...lol.

If you click on the Trash and open the Trash window then click the gear and then go empty trash, it always shows the conformation. It's just when you right click on the trash and go empty trash that is does not ask.

Hope that makes sense.

This is Tiger 10.4.7.

Just to clarify what mynameis pointed out: Most files aren't actually "deleted" until that space on the harddrive is overwritten with new data.

So you can often recover the information with a utility if the deletion wasn't too long ago.

This will not work though if you chose secure empty as it will overwrite the space with random data.

Exactly. From Apple's site:

Secure Erase Trash immediately overwrites the file with erroneous data, so that the file disappears and cannot be reconstructed.

If you're really paranoid about someone finding your porn, you can also use utilities such as Trash it! or Secure delete to overwrite the file space several times (not just once like apple's utility does) to REALLY make sure there's no way of retrieving the data.

I accidentally overwrote a file...

Hi - wish I had a better first post. I use a flash drive because I work on two different computers. I was updating my data on my home computer, but didn't realize that something happened to one of the files on my flash drive (the content was erased somehow). This was the "newer" file, so I overwrote the analagous older file on the home computer with the empty file. Is there anyway to recover the previous data?

I've found a lot of answers here, so thought I'd give it a try.
Thanks!
