I can't get beyond this point. I've tried doing a fsck -fy and it keeps coming back volume can't be repaired.

I've also tried having it boot to Norton Disk Utilities and that doesn't work either.

Any ideas?

1)Try to figureout whether it is a hardware problem --> Hardware test (Insert your installation DVD and hold down D as the computer starts up)

2)Reset PRAM

3)If nothing works try to reinstall OS X (Archive install).

I'm helping someone out and don't have the "Install CD", so I tried holding down the "D" key while trying to boot to the Norton Utilities and I get the same response ":/ root#".

I also tried clearing the PRAM with the keyboard commands and that didn't do anything as well.

One thing that I haven't experienced was I haven't heard any audible sounds while rebooting and trying all these different things. Shouldn't there be some sort of beep, etc.?

Thank You :mac:

What is the exact error message reported by fsck (there's usually an error just above the 'can't be repaired' line)? It sounds like the hard disk is unhappy, though ...

First think don't use Norton Disk Utilities, to try and resolve the problem. It will do more harm than good. You are better off getting Disk Warrior. I believe it is worth the money.
