Uninstalling apps

I have be just purchased a macbook, and so far I am very pleased. I have tried several new apps, such as different text editors. I have installed these only by unfolding some image file - I think it is - and placing the icon in my apps folder. Can I then assume that these apps will completely uninstalled just by moving that very icon to the trash?

IT is easy, but actually each App leaves behind a very small pile of garbage like cache files, preferences. To completely eliminate all traces of an app, and save thos extra few KB of clutter on the HD, I use AppZapper.
