I've got an 17" iMac Intel and when I attempted to update the OS recently, something didn't go right and when it rebooted, everything was fine except it's telling me that it's OS 0.0

Now most programs won't even work because they tell me I need OS 10.4

I've attempted to update it again, but even that's telling me I can't.

Is there any way to fix this without wiping the comp and starting from scratch?

PLEASE HELP thanks

Repair disk permissions and boot using cmd + s and run /sbin/fsck -fy

These are a few of my favorite things. Know them, love them, learn them.

Download the 10.4.7 Intel combo updater, and reapply the update, that should help.

Hmm...what you can do also is an Archive & Install, then redo all updates. This will install a fresh system, without loosing any of your data. You might need to reinstall printer driver and some software probably.

To do this, put in your install DVD, and start up holding C.
You will be asked to choose your language, go on until you come to choose the disk. Your's will probably have an exclamation sign on it.
Select it anyway, and click the Options button. Here you can choose "Erase & install" and check "Keep users and programs" (or sthg like that). Then continue the installation process.

That should finally help.
