right now my CPU was just at around 85 celcius and some sort of a fan sounding thing just kicked on.... what is that? I thought these computers didnt come with a fan...

or is that the fan for the casing, not the cpu?

the temp did drop to 78 while this loud noise was going on lol

That is the fan which cooled your machine off. you can rectify this by placing your book on a hard flat surface, allowing the machine to circulate air and keep itsself cool.

Really? That what kind of cooling system do they have, they need to be cooled somehow. If they don't they overheat and shut down.

I wasn't sure my ibook had a fan in it when I got it. It went a good 8-9 months without turning on. Then summer came and I heard the fan for the first time. It took me a minute to figure out what it was because it was the quietest fan I have ever heard.

No, there definitely IS a fan in the mac mini - always has been.

It just never turns on under normal loads, the macbook's one does more often I've found - presumably due to the thinner enclosure...

The MacBook fan is sadly very loud when at full power....
