SONY UNVEILS FIRST BLU-RAY DISC DRIVE BURNER
Burns up to 50 GB of Data and Keeps Video in Native HDV 1080i

NEW YORK, July 18, 2006 –Sony Electronics today unveiled its first internal Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) rewritable drive for the computer aftermarket.

The new drive(model BWU-100A) supports up to 50 GB of data on BD-R (write once) or BD-RE (rewritable) discs or up to four hours of high-definition video using HDV 1080i on a BD-RE 50GB disc. The new drive is capable of burning a full 25GB disc in about 50 minutes.

For personal content captured on a HDV camcorder, the BD drive is optimized for keeping the video in the native HDV 1080i for playback on home players compatible with BD-AV format and PCs with BD drives installed.

Sony’s BD drive also supports recording of standard single layer 4.7GB DVD+R/+RW/RAM discs, 8.5GB DVD+R Double/Dual Layer Discs, and CDs, making it a multi-format burner.

“Now consumers, professional videographers and filmmakers can store, record and experience the highest capacity of high-definition video available – from capture to playback,” said Bob DeMoulin, marketing manager for branded storage products in Sony Electronics’ IT Products Division. “Our Blu-ray Disc drive represents a significant leap in storage technology.”

The BWU-100A drive comes bundled with the CyberLink BD Solution® from Cyberlink Corporation, which provides a complete software application for capturing, authoring, editing and burning high-definition personal content captured by a HDV 1080i format camcorder onto BD discs. Video can also be “down-converted” to standard-definition resolution for burning onto DVDs.

The internal drive features an IDE (ATA/ATAPI) interface and standard 5.25-inch form factor for easy installation inside a PC.

Availability and Pricing

The recordable/rewritable drive will be available in August for about $750. Pre-orders are now being accepted at sonystyle.com.

Sony BD/DVD/CD rewritable drives are sold direct through sonystyle.com, at Sony Style retail stores nationwide (www.sonystyle.com/retail), at authorized resellers and retailers across the country, through mail order catalogs, and by select online shopping sites.

It has not been said if the drives are mac compatible yet, but apple is one of the companies working on the technology. If the first burners are not mac compatible, no doubt that a mac compatible burner will be no far behind. Some rumors are we will see them in the new MacPro.

The question is more: Is the software out that supports them under OS X?

I recently noticed DVD Player has settings for HD discs, so I suppose support is possibly already built-in.

If not, it'll probably be supported by a system update soon.

As for the burning side of things, I don't think Toast can manage BD-R's yet...

I don't know if software is available yet to burn data discs onto blu-ray technology, but DVD Studio Pro can burn a disc if the hardware is there.

I've started seeing DVD commercials that advertise newly released movies will be available in Blue-Ray. I'm curious as to what the real point here is? I mean, how much space does HD video take up? For home use, camcorders etc, and backups it's a dream come true.

HD Video takes up an insane amount of space at uncompressed formats (they are compressed on the disc). In uncpressed formats I remember reading some where (somebody tell me if I am wrong) that is is 10gigs per 1 minute of HD video.

-Whistles- That's unreal.

It's understandable that it's compressed on the disc ;)

Thats unbelieable, so much information at one time!

Isn't it true that there is no noticable difference in picture quality unless you have a screen larger then 30 inches?

I do not believe that to be true.. I have a 27inch HD tv, and a 46inch HD tv and both are about the same quality, the larger one is a little better, but it was also much more money. The 27 inch I do notice its HD but not as HD as the bigger model. So I think what you are saying, is slightly true.. but not 100%

I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that this will be windows only. Just look at Sony's history.

As far as i know not Microsoft nor Apple have officially choosen either HD-DVD or BlueRay. Probably this will be anounced in August with Leopard, and the same is expected for MS and Vista, whenever they release Vista.

I dunno. I like DVD's and CD's for the lounge when hooked to my 7.1 amplifier - but I won't actually every burn any of these. I prefer Hd's.

Apple is on the blue ray board, but I bet their editing / burning software will support both standards, whilst the macs will come with blu-ray as the standard drive.

(Remember the sony ceo on stage with steve?)

Microsoft favors HD-DVD more, I think. But primarily because the PS3 will have blu-ray, so they went with the optional HD-DVD drive for the xbox 360.

WOW, I'm really lagging in the area of TV technology. I have an old (big) PS2, and a standard TV with basic cable. :(

I should probably take a trip to Costco, buy a 72" Plasma HD-TV, get all the HDTV hookups, and HDTV cable service. Ah why not, a few thousand dollars right? Not like I'd rather buy a top of the line MacBook Pro or anything... lol.

The lottery would help. ;)

Well eventually you will have the hd stuff too, I was told that buy 2009 no tvs will work unless they are HD. Broadcasters are simply going to stop supporting 4:3 SD signal and only broadcast 16:9 HD signal.

The FCC made a ruling that all broadcast must be in HD within the next few years, as PowerBook said...

This info only relates to one Country

Each country has their own agenda....here in Aust we're far from fully embracing the HD tech age....the cut-off date for analog has been pushed forward more than once...

Even for non HD video, high capacity DVDs are needed. Think of box sets of TV programmes that have 5 or 6 DVDs, sometimes double sided too.

I'm also getting the impression Blu Ray is gaining the lead over HD-DVD. The Blu Ray Playstation 3, when it comes out, is also going to have a very big say in the outcome I think.
