What in god's name? The base macbook used to be $999 at the apple education store, now it's $1049. Why didn't I buy earlier? And since when do prices go up instead of down?

As far as I know, it has been $1049 (edu price) for at least the last month. I have been checking the website for updates periodically while waiting for the new production line kinks to get worked out.

iBook (powerpc chips) were 999 base, with no discount. 949 with.
MacBooks (intel chips) are 1099 base, with no discount. 1049 with.
Always has been... fact not fiction. and the price difference is well worth it - better screen resolution, performance, form factor, basically better everything
