Im not sure what is included in the software packages described on the site like iLife etc. also what languages is X-Code (again sorry if this is wrong name) capable of? i will use the mac for my uni IT course, mainly only programming and word proccessing in lectures/tutes etc. finally will it be adequete?

X-code is included on the OS X install disks and can be installed quite easily. It supports Objective C, C, C++ (I believe) and Java out of the box. You also get Perl thrown in there. It uses the GCC compiler. It should certainly be adequate for your university needs.
