• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I have some video I purchased from iTunes in an .m4v format that I'd like to put on a dvd. iDVD says that it doesn't know the format and I have to use iMovie to import the file to a recogniseable type. iMovie doesn't know what to do with it either; I get an error message saying it can't be parsed. I tried Streamclip, it doesn't know the file type. I tried ffmpeg, and when I drop the m4v file in, it says that it is a mov file, and when I press 'encode' I get the ready ding immediately, and no file saved in the path I specify. Any help?

Can't do it. The DRM on the video doesn't allow for it. Since pretty much every App that can convert or Rip it on the Mac relies on Quicktime, and Quicktime knows it is DRM'd, it will not work. iTMS does not allow for the burning of Video to DVD like it doers Music to CDs.

I'd ask that over at iLounge and see what they say.

When you purchase vids from iTunes, you accept the TOS. Read it.

Just so you know, this sort of activity is frowned upon and generally not discussed in these forums. If you're looking to circumnavigate the TOS from iTMS, this is not really the place to ask, it might get you banned.
