Would like to purchase new scanner to use with new iMac 20". Existing HP 5400c was too slow on the PC. Would like speed plus quality output plus reliability. 8 1/2 x 11 scan area OK. Would appreciate experienced advice.

I bought a Cannon N676U a few years back at an Apple store for about $99. No complaints, works plenty fast and produces good quality scans. It's USB as well.

I've got a Canon all-in-one which works great and a Epson all-in one laser which is also good. So far as reviews are concerned I've heard the most positive reactions about Canons scanners.

From MacWorld and from here, getting impression Canon may be dominate or consensus favorite among Mac-owners. Would that be fair to say?

FYI, received this reply from HP when enquiring about software upgrade for my existing ScanJet 5400c:

"Thank you for contacting HP Total Care. I understand that you are
looking for software for your scanjet 5400 on your new Mac with the
Intel core processor.

HP Engineers are currently working on new software / drivers for the
Intel Processor. There is no ETA at this time. You can sign up for
updates at the link below.

The only scanner HP currently has the are supported with the Intel Macs
are the 4370, 4850, 4890. We also have a full line of All in One
printer/scanner/copiers like PSC 1410, 1510, 1610, 2350, Officejet 4315,
5610, 6310, 7210, 7310, 7410, Photosmart 2575, 2610, 2710, 3210, 3310."

I used to be the girl that sent the E-Mail from HP total care. I worked in their Macintosh technical support department for printers and all-in-one units. I have to say they did make a small attempt but I only use Canon products really, even when I worked there I had mentioned to serious users that Canon is great.

The problem with HP is they work hardest on the projects that cover the bulk of their clients, they did not see potential with Macintosh users because they thought it would be a small group of users. I had a **** of a time working there because I never dealt with idiots as all Macintosh users are brilliant and polite ;)

I only left because they closed the Macintosh department and merged it with another support team, I was only there for the Mac!

Actually, with only a couple of exceptions (on this forum...no longer with us) I've found this to be pretty much true. Hopefully I may be included in that number as my experience grows and my anxieties subside.

Probably should stop using "actually" in my sentences. However, ACTUALLY, I don't object to rudeness. Especially on forums. I want the opinions/info. If the manner of expresion is obnoxious, I can deal with that -- as long as the information/info is there.
