DVI vs VGA

I purchased a new 20.1 inch LCD monitor the other day. As it turns out it has both VGA and DVI connectors. I currently have it connected to my Quad via VGA, but am tempted to go the DVI route.

Having never used DVI before, I am curious what the benefits of switching to DVI would be as opposed to staying with VGA. Any one have any advice or sources that can tell me what I stand to gain, if any, from going to DVI?

DVI has a better picture quality than VGA. If you send an analog signal to your LCD, first it should be converted to a digital signal. But with DVI this wont be the case. However if you by a high quality LCD, the difference could be quite visible.

On my Dell LCDs, I can tell a difference between the VGA and the DVI input. DVI looks a lot better.

On my 19" Viewsonic Wide Screen, I can for sure see an difference between VGA and DVI with DVI looking noticeably better.

Agreed: With VGA, you're taking a digital image, converting it into an analog signal and then displaying it. With DVI, it stays completely digital, resulting in a sharper, 100% accurate reproduction of what's being displayed.

Well, I picked up a DVI-D Single Link Cable today and hooked it up. The difference is quite noticeable compared to the VGA cable. The last little bit of blurriness that I had with this new monitor is completely gone. The picture is really crystal clear and I am somewhat amazed by it.

you had vga on your quad? I only have dvi outputs.

No, the GeForce card only has DVI outputs, but the system came with the DVI to VGA converter cable and I was using that until about 10 minutes ago.
