The title says it all. I hear that the new Core 2 Duo chips will be 64 bit, but I have also heard that the existing Core Duo chips themselves may be 64 bit. Googling around hasn't really answered this question. Does anyone know definitively which one it is - 32 or 64? Thanks.

I'm almost 100% sure that they're 32-bit, I'm pretty sure my 17" Intel iMac is 32-bit. Honestly, I don't think that 32 or 64 bit makes that much of a difference. Either way, my iMac kicks ***.

They are 32 bit. Intels new 64 bit chips are still a few months away...

From Wikipedia.org:

"One of the few shortcomings of the new Core Duo chips is no 64-bit (EM64T) support."

That's very disappointing. Isn't the Mac OS a 64bit enviornment? Why design software that your hardware can't support :(

Parts of 10.4 are 64 bit and the OS can handle 64 Bit Apps. Originally 10.5 was to be all 64 bit, but who knows...

Some info on Mermon.

Conroe = Core2Duo = Laptops.

Mermon = Core2 Extreem = Dektops.

Both are 64 Bit.

baggs, don't you have this reversed? I believe that Conroe = desktops. Merom is the lower power version for laptops. The Extreme is just the most highly clocked Conroe as far as I know. Then there are the new quad cores coming from Intel, called Westcott I think??? These are actually 2 dual cores, not a single quad, but who is quibbling...

The general poop I heard was that Apple would be replacing the Power Mac G5 with a Conroe Extreme based machine, running at 2.97 GHz ... Steve Jobs STILL doesn't have that 3.0 GHz Mac he wanted so badly...
