Let me preface this by saying that I didn't appear to be having any problems BEFORE I ran the disk utility. I wanted to be sure that all was as it should be so I verified and repaired a minor permissions issue. Then I went to do a disk verify and this is what happened:

Volume Bitmap needs minor repair
Checking volume information
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit.

The "repair disk" button is now grayed out (not useable).

What do I do now?

Thanks for help!

The repair disk button is greyed out because you can't repair the startup disk.
You will have to boot from your install/restore CD and then run Disk Utility from there to run a repair your HD.

Thanks for the input. I found another post in which someone was told to boot with CMD + S and then run the command:

fsck -fy

for a similar issue.

I tried it while awaiting a response from you great folks and it worked.

I've only had my iMac a few months so I am still learning the many differences between it and my old PCs

Thanks!

Michael
