I'm sorry, I don't mean to sound nasty, but a LOT of questions posted here CAN be answered in the Boot Camp manual. I suggest you print it out. Following it word for word will NOT give you any problems.

So just a reminder, the manual's there for a reason, READ IT!!!

ps. the reason you dont have room on your hard drive is because you put too much stuff on it, avi files will not play without VLC, dvd's need mactheripper and toast 7 to be properly copied, you will not get a virus on your computer even if you do go to porn sites, your intel imac is not a G5, you should be in the IRC chat, the adobe suite is not universal and you should not expect amazing performance of your pirated copy of adobe cs2 because it is running under rosetta and will be a little slower, adobe states on its website that the new version will be out mid 07

Yeah but isnt that what the forums are for?? So that people can post Q&A?? I mean the manuals are good for people that have time to read them. But if you dont have time to read them or are the typical male and doesnt believe in manuals... then these forums are for them.

I agree that forums can be helpful for Q&A.
Still, if someone feels that he/she "doesn't have time" to read a manual, then as harsh as it may sound, that person is an idiot in my book. Manuals are included for a reason, to tell a person exactly how something works. It is a reference that one should keep handy.
What takes more time is for one to:
try to figure it out on their own
give up when they get nowhere with their lack of finding an answer that way
register on a forum
write up a post
then wait for someone to reply with a useful answer in a timely fashion

Or you could just take the few seconds to look it up in a manual.
Even better, if you do go the forum route.... take a few moments and search before you post.

what did people do before the internet and forums etc. you picked up your manual, fipped to the index or table of contents, went to the 5 to 10 pages of information and sat down and read it for a minute. no one says you gotta read the whole thing, but just pick it up and look.

it is the same as the search function, you should use it before you post

Intead of making a new thread on...I'll just ask here...can I use the XP/Product Key AGAIN on my iMac Intel Core Duo...???

Probably but you would be violating the Microsoft Licesnse. You should have a license for each machine you install XP on.

They had to actually do some work on their own. :)

I remember when i first got into computers (PC's...sorry) my freinds and I loved figuring stuff out on our own. We would try anything and everything. Open the computers, play with the software, etc. Keep in mind this was in the mid 90's before we had plug n pray, the internet was just starting to eveolve and we had the old time BBS's that you had to dial into. All text, no graphics. It seems today that everyone wants the easiest route and quickest answer. No one wants the satisfaction of figuring it out.

At the risk of sounding old and jaded ... :)

When I first got into computers (mid- to late-80s, Spectrum 48K and BBC Model B) all I had was the machine, a manual and a few magazines. While on the one hand, I think that the internet is a great tool and certainly should help people get up to speed a lot faster than the previous generation, it is annoying when people ask questions that they could have answered in less time by either checking the online help, or just typing their question into google.

If I'm feeling generous I might help out anyway, but other times if I can find the answer in the first 5 hits of a google search I'll just say nothing.

Pretty much every question you can ask can be found by searching these forums and Google. There is literally no point in posting questions except for the convenience of not having to search. I don't mind answering people's questions, but it annoys me when someone asks something that can be *easily* found with the Search button and/or Google.

That's not strictly true. Even if somebody else has had the same problem before, successfully finding an answer with search relies on several things:

1. The person found a solution
2. They documented it online in some way, either through forums, blogs or whatever
3. The search terms you use match the words they used (e.g. the way you describe a problem may not exactly match how somebody else would word it)
4. You are searching in the right place

As you can see, there are many reasons a problem that can be fixed can be really difficult to find. I have had one or two problems that took a while to find an answer to (e.g. where can I find a list of DVD drives supported by Mac OS X without patchburn). Also, some people just aren't very good at wording there problems in such a way that a search engine would be able to match it to a result.

I tend to agree that the purpose of these forums is for folks to help each other. Sometimes the answers are trivial and sometimes they are not. Your success with Google (and ANY search including this site's) is directly proportional to the question you ask it, and very specifically the wording you use. If you don't ask it just right, you don't get the answers you are looking for. This may be why apparently stupid questions get asked.

Meantime, almost everybody on this board is a relative Mac newbie so I am told. "Stupid" isn't stupid to them. They may not have the experience base to work off of. Only 4 weeks ago I got my first Mac and couldn't figure out something as basic as how to install an app (and I have been using computers since the early 1980's, just not Macs). I posted a query on how to do it and some helpful soul got right back to me. It made a world of difference.

A little tolerance goes a long way. Lets be nice to each other.

okay, now that's just plain lazy. The manual for Boot Camp is like fifteen pages, and ten of those are STEP BY STEP processes on how to actually install windows: what to select where, which partition to use, ntfs vs. fat32, and the other pages are precautions and intros. Now, this manual took me about fifteen-twenty minutes to read.

as i said, LAZY!

Not to be negative though... just read it. please. That's a common problem with a lot of people these days, they refuse to read manuals.

yes, and let's also not forget that everyone was a n00b at sometime or another... it took me a while to figure out a lot of problems. But, as a matter of fact, I rarely use these forums for problems, more as a chat with other mac fans or discussions on interesting points, and even help. When I do have a problem, the forum is my LAST result... I search the original manuals, then the maker's website, then google, THEN i ask the question. A little research goes a long way.

windows won't authenticate the key and after 30 days windows will stop working. or so i'm told.

What about when something new comes out. If your're the first person to try something and run into a problem, chanes are no ones else has found it yet.

OR, chances are you could TRY searching and then if you find nothing, then you come to a forum.

but, for the most part, I have found the answer either in google, a manual, or a previous thread in the forums, for the most part the manual. hence my point.

READ MANUALS!

I fully agree with your point of reading the manuals, I'm one who does. I was just saying i'm sure there are questions that havn't been asked yet.

But its soo much easier just to ask questions here. :biohazard

btw what is boot camp? Im thinking about buying an apple... but I think i will order and reorder it 6-7 times before I finally decide on a mac.. but i will probably mess that up... and I will end up trying to sue apple...
