so my buddy picked up a host/domain with 1and1.com

now, this is the site www.sentienceclothing.com

i put that thogether in the first 5 minutes (horrible I know) but ALL it lets me use are templates.

how can I NOT use a template? I just want a black page, with the image, name, a few words, and some email links on it.. that is all.

am i forced to use 1and1.com templates? It's just the basic package.

thanks :)

splash screen is way way way too slow, but you said you were working on it.

um you shouldnt be restricted to the websites templates if you use something like dreamweaver or freeway.

hopefully not, I was thinking about getting hosting with them because its cheap. I might have to rethink that choice if they restrict you to templates. I hear their CP is pretty hard to figure out, but if you find out about the templates let us know, and tell us how the CP is. I really want to use dreamhost.com, but they are too expensive for the site I need. Any other good hosting companies out there?

No, you can use FTP to upload. I can create a Splash Page for you, just send me a logo and details if you want,,

Nope. You can use any WYSIWYG editor, and either save directly to the server or store locally and upload with a FTP program.

Something I'm doing for a bar at the moment:

where would I find these "WYSIWYG" editors and also, how would I upload it onto the site? Can someone explain the FTP programs to me?

thank you.

All i see when i log into the 1and1 domain is a "web page builder" and that is it..

what am i doing wrong?

a "WYSIWYG" editor means, "what you see is what you get". Dreamweaver, Frontpage, iWeb, RapidWeaver are all examples of that type of editor. As far as the CP for 1and1 I cant help, ive never used them.

i found that 1and1 are very restrictive, many years ago i tryed there service and found that there domain service was the worst. for starters you cant transfer a domain away from 1and1 and that made me stay with them for a few months until i wrote them a letter telling them to realise the domain that i paid for.

the company may be thriving but its not hosting as it should be, i have tryed many hosting packages with many different companies and found that (MT) is the best for support, stability.

Even with the basic package, you should have an FTP account.

Download a simple web-site creation app (rapidweaver, NVU or iWeb) and create your page.

Next, download an FTP application and log-into your web server:
Username is normally your domain name, or your 1&1 account name and enter the password you received from them.

Then upload the files to the server and you should be able to access it.
