Video Codec problems

So i just bought a new Macbook yesterday. I can't get most of my videos to play, expecially the .avi files. They just don't play. I'm guessing its a codec problem, but almost all of the codes out there are .exe files and i can't open them! i'm feeling stuck, how am i supposed to do anything if the files wont open and the codecs won't work?

Shouldn't have got a Mac...

Here's a thread describing a player called VLC that one of our many helpful members posted. Check it out...it will play most any video file you can download.
