Hi
For some reason, my Macs stop stop working after I have left them powered up for a couple of days without using them.
When I´ve been away for some time, and sit down in front of my Mac, it´s typically very slow and grudgy to use. So I reboot to increase performance. It reboots OK, loads up the gray startup screen and spinning wheel as usual. The problem is that it never gets any further. The wheel just keeps on spinning, and after a while the fan goes all wild and spins at its maximum speed, sounding like a jetplane about to take off.
I´ve tried things like resetting PRAM and SMC, running disk check and repairing permissions. No matter what I do, the machine never gets past the gray startup screen. The only thing that has worked for me is reinstalling Mac OS X. Something I´m very tired of doing for the nth time this year!
At first I thought this was some kind of hardware-specific issue, but the problem has occured both on my PowerMac and my iMac G4. So it seems like a flaw in OS X.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Is there some kind of issue with leaving Macs unattended for days?
