installing itunes on external HD

Does anyone know of a way to install itunes on an external Hd?

I 'm trying to free up some space on my mac by place all of my music on an external HD. I can drag the app from the mac to the external HD, but it won't update the music library(external) without adding it back onto the mac. I've tried to install itunes on the external, but it's not capable to do it since it's not part of the start up disk.

Has anyone tried this before and succeeded?

you can leave the actual app on the internal.. grabe the itunes folder from the internal and drag that onto the external.. i have cleared out the library.. (make sure you hit "KEEP FILES") if you dont.. all your music will be gone.

once you got the music on the external.. just re-add it in.

If you go to iTunes Preferences', and then Advanced -> General. You can change the location of the music folder. So you can use an external drive as the music folder. Haven't done it, so somebody could probably confirm it works that way.

Yeah, that's they way you need to do it:

Move all your music, and change the location of the music folder under the preferences.
It should actually just 'find' it in the new location without you having to re-add or delete it at all...

You might also find Libra - http://homepage.mac.com/sroy/libra/ useful as it allows you to have mulitple libraries. E.g. A small portable subset on a laptop and rest on that pluggable HD.
