First off congrats on your graduation present, your parents buy good gifts. :D I didn't keep AIM on long enough to experience such problems. May I suggest you use http://www.adiumx.com/ for all your instant messaging needs?

I have yet to use bittorrent on my Mac but you may wanna try out Bit Tornado. Good luck. :)

if it came with an installer and has an uninstaller use that....but basically just drag the file from your apps folder to the trash. this method will leave a few straggling files which in total may add up to 1 or 2mb and you dont really need to bother them....if you want to bother with them do a forum search on deleting files

Personally I love Adium. I have it on my MB and the tabbed windows combined with built in spell check mean I will not be leaving it any time soon. If only they made a WinXP version for when I am on my desktop...

While Adium is no doubt the best chat client I have found for OSX, on the Windows side I use a program called Trillian . Between these two programs they make sure that none of my platforms are infested with anything from AOL. Trillian offers tabbing, I believe spellcheck, as well as wikipedia links to uncommon words right in the conversation window. If you are still using XP and need a chat client then Trillian is the closest thing to Adium you will find.

I also use trillian for Windows on my desktop. Takes a while to get use to, but all in all, its a great client. Especially if you use YIM, MSN, AIM, IRC, etc.

I think the best torrent program on Mac is Transmission.

Torrents: Azureus, full featured beast. Transmission light weight to get the job done but seems to miss out on a lot of peers.

Chat: AdiumX no question there. iChat for A/V tho.

Windows: GAIM supports more protocols than Trillian and you don't have to pay for them.
