compression program

i am new to mac osx,and i downloaded a movie but its to big to fit onto a 700mb cdr,can anyone tell me a program than will crompress it to fit,or a easy to use avi splitter program.thanx

Handbrake should do the trick for you. I'm sure there is a reason but I have to ask. Why not just burn it to a DVD?
