How to open Finder files in the same window?

Can anybody tell me how to set the Finder options so that when I click on files, they open in the same window (browser for example) instead of opening a new window each time. I know that I can do this by dragging the file to the window, but it would be much better for me just to be able to click on the file.

Files are going to be opened by whatever their default application is.
Not sure what you mean by this, could you explain a little better?

You might try the Finder preferences, under the General tab.

Yep. Finder Preferences (CMD+,). Uncheck "Always Open Folders in a New Window."
