• The Mac-Forums Community Guidelines (linked at the top of every forum) are very clear, we respect US law and court precedence when it comes to legality of activity.

    Therefore to clarify:
    • You may not discuss breaking DVD or BluRay encryption, copying, or "ripping" commercial, copy-protected DVDs.
    • This includes DVDs or BluRays you own. Even if you own the DVD or BluRay, it is still technically illegal under the DMCA to break the encryption. While some may argue otherwise, until the law is rewritten or the US Supreme Court strikes it down, we will adhere to the current intent of the law.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying unprotected movies or homemade DVDs.
    • You may discuss ripping or copying tools in the context that they are used for legal purposes as outlined in this post.

I am new to the Mac world and would like to know what type of camera would be good for the Mac? I have a 9 month old son and two very good friends who have 2 year old and i would like to be able to record and then edit and make to DVD's for family/friends viewing. I would appreciate any help.

Right now i have the DCR DVD203 but it doesnt look to be compatible with the Mac. I am also afraid to put those little DVD's into the drive since it looks like they may not eject.

Get a MiniDV based camera...
You can transfer the material over via firewire and edit it properly, which isn't really possible with the mini-dvd based ones.

So: MiniDV with Firewire port and you should be fine.

Any particular brand or model? We have a local best buy that I get all my electronics from and they usually have a good selection.

I'm not really up-to-date with the current crop of devices, but I'm sure you can find a recent review of DV-Cams online somewhere...

Some of the newer models have multiple ccd chips on them, which is supposed to improve colour balance - but that's all I've really heard recently ;)

I'm get one that's not too bulky, has fairly good battery life and is easy to use (but not too limited in featureset).

Thank you all for your help and advice. I went ahead and got the Canon ZR500. I went to camcorderinfo.com and they gave it some pretty good reviews for an entry level MiniDV. It looks like what I need to get started.
