Which computer would be better?

iBook Notebook 14.1" 900-MHz G3, 256MB, 40GB HD, DVD/CD-RW

OR

iBook Notebook 12.1" 800MHz G4, 256MB, 30GB HD, DVD/CD-RW

You never know with used equipment, but if they were 'new' I'd say Get the G4. The G3's had problems with video card failure requiring replacement of the motherboard.

The G4 also has AltiVec, which helps a lot with many kinds of video playback encoding schemes. I personally prefer the portability of the 12.1" model as well.

If you want to simulate the interaction of galaxies, yeah, maybe it's too slow. If you want to run Final Cut Pro, it may be too slow. But if you want email, word processing, iphoto, itunes, internet access, etc. then it's more than adequate.
