new iPod has no firewire support at all??

i just got a new ipod from my dad, because he won 3 of them. long story.

so i plug it into my old firewire connector and get this big screen saying "firewire is not supported at all....blablabla", but the ipod started charging....i have now been importing my songs for what seeems like forever on this stupid usb2.0 connection....

apple i want my firewire connection back!!!!!!

yikes... I had no idea. I would bet that Apple is phasing out the FireWire... which is dumb, FW800 is crazy quick.

Yep. However, if your USB connection is slow, maybe you are on a USB 1 port. My USB 2 is as fast as FireWire ever was.

As stated, the iPod can still charge via Firewire.

I bet you're either using a USB1.1 hub or cable. Filling your ipod over an actual USB2 connection is quite fast. Well, compared to 1.1 anyway.

Yeah, it also means that you can't use the new iPod as an emergency startup volume any more... (at least not on powerPC macs)

Good point. I don't know why yours would be so slow, USB 2 is just as fast as FW.....

if my memory serves me correctly:
theoretically usb2.0 is faster than firewire 400 but the problem with usb2.0 is that the transfer rate is not constant so at one point you can be doing, for example, 3mbps, the next .5mbps and then 8mbps. firewire is supposed to be X mbps constantly and the speed is not supposed to fluctuate.

i did notice this while watching it import onto my ipod that some songs took a lil bit longer to transfer than otehrs. no these were not ten minute songs versus 3 minute songs.

If the iPod is hooked directly to the Macs USB 2 port it should not be a problem. If it is daisy chained or hubed, then perhaps. As I asaid, mine has cinsistantly been as fast as FW, even when upload a large number of files.

i have no probs with my 2.0 i think its just as fast, still mad apple droped firewire they pretty much invented it

they dropped it to make the dang thing smaller and also because so many winblows users only have USB.
coach_z has it right about firewire its a constant 400Mbps not a burst rate which USB2 is
