Under the heading of "Inconsequential But Annoying" is my experience with Mail Preferences (Mac OS X 10.3.9). I've selected Sosumi as my mail sound, and I've checked both "Play sounds for other mail actions" and "Index decrypted messages for searching."
At one time, when I heard the Sosumi sound (while engaged in doing anything online), I knew I had just received an email. Also, if there were new messages in my mailbox, the Mail icon in my Dock would show a solid red circle on it as an alert. That red dot is missing now and I hear the Sosumi sound at odd times while I'm online with no relevance to email. From force of habit I reflexively look for new messages when I hear the sound, but it no longer signals anything as far as I know.
What does all this mean?
