For the past week I cannot get my Mac computer to boot up when asked. Used to just click mouse a couple times, then it took lightly hitting the on/off button. Now I have to hit on/off button repeatedly for some time before it boots up. What's up with this?

I'd hazard to guess that your hard drive is dying. You can check its health with:

Apple's Hardware Test/Apple Diagnostics:
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH18765?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Hardware Test is for June 2013 and earlier Macs; Apple Diagnostics is for more recent Macs.

Apple's Hardware Test (AHT):
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
but it doesn’t do as thorough job as it could. A failing test will be accurate, but an “okay” test may not be. More thorough would be:

Apple Diagnostics
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202731

The free demo version of the following will comprehensively tell you about your hard drive's health:
DriveDX - free demo

If your drive is on it's last legs, you need to back it up ASAP. I recommend a clone backup, such as SuperDuper! or CarbonCopyCloner.

I was wondering from their growing list of boot requirements if a big hammer might be next on the list.

All jokes aside Randy, you must be very busy with your lawering ect. as you've been conspicuously missing by your absence here.

How nice of you to notice, Patrick! You are very kind.

I've been cutting back on participating on all of the discussion lists I'm on. I'm not just busy with work, but I don't have the enthusiasm and drive I used to.

I've been mentally toying with the idea of creating a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Web site, as certain questions (this thread is an example) keep on coming up over and over. (First question answered: Do I need anti-virus software for my Macintosh?) Maybe it should be crowd-sourced, like a Wiki? But I don't know if I'll ever get around to it.

Just brainstorming....but maybe the replacement Mac-Forums Web site that became unnecessary would be perfect for such a use?

I still pop in now and then here when I have a huge amount of work and I want to procrastinate. Last night was an example.

It's nice to see you all occasionally!

The same thing can happen during one's retirement years as well. But it helps keep the old brain cells active but we don't want to loose all your Mac expertise.
