In preparation for my new iMac, I am trying to learn as much as possible about OSX, so bear with my questions. I understand what widgets are, but where do I find them to install?
almost anywhere. do a search for widgets or even a specific type (music widgets, weather widgets, etc). Try the apple site for a fairly large collection.
Widgets are little "mini programs" that run in Dashboard. Dashboard is a program that comes with OS X.
Dashboard comes pre loaded with some common Widgets, but you can find several others around the net to add.
By clicking on the Dashboard icon in the Dock, it brings all of these little programs up so you have instant access to weather, news, calendar, clock, stock and investment info, games, etc. The list goes on and on. You can even search the internet from Dashboard with various widgets.
