Freezes on startup

My new macbook pro freezes on start up after about 20 sec. The mouse pointer is still able to move but the computer does not respond to click nor typing. Sometimes if I don't respond quickly enough at the password screen I can't even have a chance to log in. And sometimes there isn't enough time to complete boot up. Any ideas?
