There is a new scam on the Web that very effectively scares users and attempts to extort them. But this scam has no teeth.

Typically a user will have been on a porn site and subsequently they receive an email showing your password (and the fact that the password is correct is what really scares folks) and saying that while you were on the porn site all of your contacts were downloaded. The scammer threatens to send a split screen video of your face from your webcam along with the video you were watching to many of your contacts. Generally they want you to send a ransom to a particular address to keep them from doing that.

By all accounts the ransomer doesn't have the goods to follow through on their threat. The scammer has your password from a previous large break-in to company or Web site. (There have been a shocking number of these reported in the press over the last number of years.)

So, if you are confronted by this scam, all that you need do is make sure that all of your passwords are updated, and you should be fine to then ignore this scam. There is no malware on your computer and nothing is going to be sent to your friends/contacts.

If anyone wants to verify if their emails and passwords are available on the internet/dark web, they can go here:
https://haveibeenpwned.com/
Type in the specific email address concerned, and the verification will arrive saying yes - if it has - and which specific breaches or it will return an all clear.

Of course assuming that I would use the same password for my porn login (not that I have a porn login. ;) ) as the one I use (and possibly share with a spouse) for my email. If you are lazy enough to use the same password for every site/service, then you're just inviting trouble.

Either way, the scammers are definitely getting creative these days.

Thank you Randy! This is very helpful, coz I have to admit that I am too lazy with passwords. There are some sites where I use same pw, so this one is good for checking if my account is at risk.

I've already heard of a version of this scam where porn was never mentioned.

Also, I'd like to point out that there is nothing illegal about looking at porn. I submit that blaming the victims of a scam is not at all a nice thing to do.

Looking at adult porn is legal but kid porn is not. Knew someone who was in prison for 16 years for doing kid porn. I for one was glad they got caught as they were sending it across state lines.

No one brought up child pornography in this thread until you did.

well I don't think I've apportioned any blame on anyone. of course people can look at legal porn sites if they want but they have to accept that there will be risks attached while poking about in this section of the internet - that was the message behind my post, not some holier than thou blaming mission.

I don't view porn myself, not because of any security risk I might add, but because I'm happily married in a trusting relationship - and have seen the damage that (being caught) viewing porn can do to a relationship between people that are very close to me.

And I think no we've wandered off-topic enough. For those interested, the link to the scam is in the first post.
