hello, I'm having a hard time Finding a solid answer on this.

My older 23" Apple display works flawlessly as a additional display for my older iMac connected to thunderbolt-DVI adapter.

Now I want to use it with my new iMac but the guy at the store wasn't sure if a USB-c to DVI adapter would work.

Any experiences on this?

Thanks

DVI and HDMI use the same display mechanisms. The only thing that HDMI does on top of DVI is also carry audio. The USB-C hubs that have HDMI ports on them work fine, by the same regard any of them that have a DVI port will work just as fine.

Why do you need a USB-c to DVI adapter? If you purchased a new iMac (we're talking new, not new to you), the iMac series has Thunderbolt ports which are backwards comptible with MiniDisplayPort. So again, why do you need USB-c? Or are you not giving us all the information we need to help you?

Are you saying new iMacs, have Thunderbolt and USB-c ports? I didn't see Thunderbolt ports.

No, I'm saying that new iMacs (I have one) have Thunderbolt OUTPUT ports (two to be exact). Those ports are backward compatible to the MDP standard. No one said anything about the new iMacs having a USB-c output port. Don't know where you got that idea?

To the OP:

My 23" Apple Display has no MiniDisplayPort, only DVI

Again, what does that have to do with USB-c? Your new iMac has 2 TB output ports which I explained above are compatible with the MDP standard. All you need is an adapter: MiniDisplayPort to DVI which you can buy just about anywhere.

This Is the back of my iMac . Where is this the MiniDisplayPort you speak of?unless I'm mistaking, there are none. The USB-c cable connects to the Thunderbolt 3 output. Which I know is the only way to connect my Apple cinema display with a USB-c from the Thunderbolt 3 port to a DVI with an adapter. All I was asking for was if someone had any experience with my particular set up because I have heard conflicting information about this issue. :)

If your iMac is a 2017 Model, then it has TB 3 ports which are different. In that situation you WILL need USB-c to a DVI connector. Much of the confusion could have been avoided if you had told us the year and model iMac you had.

If you need a USB-c to DVI adapter, try www.monoprice.com or amazon.
