My 2012, 15 inch has 1x SD card reader and 2x USB-3, plus other out/inputs, no DVD drive.

How can I best function one of the new MBPro's if I am running 1 or 2x offbaord hard dives and the Mac power cable, which takes up one of the USB-C outputs, the printer will run WiFi and thus wireless.

Do I have to buy more devices to then plug in to the MBPro?

Thanks in advance.

USB hub is your answer.

Is there a preferred one I wonder?

The few I've seen on Amazon are all flawed, some you can't access the internet whilst using, another only powers 1x offboard hard drive, another won't recharge iPhone / iPads in the USB-3 outputs.

Not one I have seen can give me a hub that's not flawed.

My needs:

1x USB for an offboard HD and ideally USB 3.1 Gen 2 (USB 3.0 and USB 3.1 Gen 1 can transfer data up to 5 Gbps, and USB 3.1 Gen 2 can transfer data up to 10 Gbps).

1x USB for charging an iPhone
1x SD / Micro SD card reader
1x wifi uncompromised

Cheers

Did you do an internet search for your needs?

I've been using a Satechi USB-C hub that does all that and has a HDMI output. This one works really well and has no issues with my WiFi which I use 100% of the time.

My last MBP upgrade was to a late 2016 model for exactly the same reason. I did not wish to upgrade my peripheral devices just yet. Really the emphasis is on wireless today via WiFI or Bluetooth. You will almost certainly need a USB-C to USB connector which are quite cheap from Apple and if you limit yourself to one or two external devices at a time you should not have a problem.

That hub has very poor reviews, 22% think I is awful, and also condemn the user to the slower 3.0 speeds, negating the faster USB-C speeds.

This is what I mean, Apple have forced us to use thirds rate third party items which both do not work well and negate the advantages of the original design.

Uhhh, 22%? If you want to the USB-C speeds, then go directly to the port, simple. You bought a 13" MBP which has 2x USB ports and you obviously didn't purchase it realizing what your use case was going to be. My 15" MBP has 4x ports and I've had a couple of different hubs and the one I mentioned works really well, but if it doesn't suit your needs, so be it.

I have little faith in powered USB hubs although my wife retains a single Logitech hub which has worked well for years because she has a wired keyboard at home and a backup drive connected full time to the other free port. This gives her access for our USB printer but the next one will be WiFi so I don't anticipate needing the hub much longer. Since we have been back in Melbourne I have introduced her to the Apple Wireless keyboard which she loves because she can put it on her lap. Our iPhone's can sync to iTunes or iMazing via WiFi.
If I was to buy a new MBP today I think the Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter which lets you connect any Mac with a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable. They are a little pricy at $99.00 but it covers all my bases in one device.

Thanks, yes it's been such a dismal purchase that in two weeks I've used it for two hours on one occasion, and continue to use my 2012, 15 inch MBP instead.

If you are that unsatisfied by your purchase, you should return it for a full refund before you go past the 14 day period, which you might be very close to.

+1 for taking it back if you are in the 14-day window. No need to keep something you don't like.
