Hello,
I bought Air 13 A1466 mid2013 without ssd and from what I was able to find, the cheapest way to run it is adapter from apple ssd port to m2, so i need something like this:

and SSD, for example ADATA SU800? Will it work?
Sorry, for my english.

I believe with the correct adapter it will work. Go to www.macsales.com and check to see if they have the adapter you're looking for and which model SSDs they're compatible with.

And welcome to our forums.

I don't found this adapter on macsales :( But this adapter just reroute path, so should i work :) but hardware (ssd to mac) compatibility may be a bigger problem.

And welcome to our forums.
Thanks

You can get the adapter on eBay, here is the link: https://www.ebay.com/itm/112615200702?ul_noapp=true&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true&afsrc=1&rmvSB=true

and then you can use a Samsung 950 PRO 512GB NVMe M.2 drive. Here's the link to one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-95...515953&hash=item213c27ed6c:g:dyoAAOSw7WJawn7K

Before installing these though, I would recommend making a bootable Mac OS X high sierra installer thumb drive first then install everything and boot off the thumb drive. Then you can use disk utility to format the new NVMe M.2 drive and then install the OS.

I detailed what I did to my 2013 and 2015 MacBook Air here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macbook-air-2017-ssd-compatibility-with-samsung-ssd.2099405/

The new NVMe M.2 drive provides 3x the speed improvement over the original Apple drives. I love the improved performance of my new drive.

You need to have an original apple ssd in the machine and install high Sierra. Installing high Sierra will ensure the air is running the latest firmware in order to use nvme drives.

You are partially correct. If you have a Mac OS Installer thumb drive you do not need the original apple ssd to install High Sierra onto the new NVMe M.2 drive. Download Install Disk Creator onto a mac where you'll download Mac OS High Sierra then run Install Disk Creator. Here is the link: https://macdaddy.io/install-disk-creator/

On the Mac where you downloaded the High Sierra Installer and Install Disk Creator app, install an 8GB (16GB preferable) thumb drive already formatted (Mac OS Extended Journaled) and run the Install Disk Creator app to install High Sierra to make the install thumb drive. Then place the thumb drive into the MBA (this is assumed that you have already installed the new M.2 drive using a Sintech adapter) hold the option key during boot up and select the thumb drive to boot off of.

Once the OS has booted, go to Disk Utility software and format the new M.2 drive in the Mac OS Extended Journaled format then quit the disk utility software and install High Sierra. It is simple as that and you do not need the original Apple SSD to do this.

I have detailed what I have done here: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macbook-air-2017-ssd-compatibility-with-samsung-ssd.2099405/

There was another person on another forum that purchased a MacBook pro without the original Apple ssd and a Samsung nvme drive.

High Sierra could not be installed because the MacBook's firmware was too old. Once the person installed high Sierra to the original internal Apple ssd, the firmware in the MacBook was updated to the latest release. High Sierra installed without issue.

I read that but chances are you won't have this issue. I have rebuilt 3 MacBook Airs so far and have not run into this issue. I was able to upgrade to High Sierra on two of the MacBook Airs. The third MBA is my recently acquired 11-inch MBA so I will find out as soon as my NVMe M.2 drive arrives....

I guess I was unfortunate when upgrading three Macbooks (1 mid-2013 13" Air, 1 early 2015 13" Air, late 2013 13" MBP). I had to upgrade the firmware before I could use either an Intel 600p or Samsung 960evo in any of the machines.

Sorry to hear that you were one of the unfortunate ones who had to do this... guess you can say I have been one of the lucky ones ;)

Another issue I came across with my early 2015 Air running an Intel 600p was during an OS upgrade from 10.13.3 to 10.13.4 whereby I was presented with a firmware error in that the firmware could not be upgraded on my Air. I installed an original Apple SSD, restored a Time Machine backup of 10.12.3, and run the OS update. No errors with the original SSD and the firmware on the air was updated from MBA71.0171.B00 to MBA71.0176.B00.
