I just purchased a 2017 MacBook Pro and the trackpad almost sounds "hollow" instead of a solid click. Is this normal for newer MacBook Pros?

The newer MacBook Pro models have a different type of Trackpad than the older models came with. I don't know what you mean by hollow sound, perhaps you're referring to the pressure applied and feedback? Anyway, if you have some doubt about the quality or operation of the Trackpad, contact Apple support. You have 90 days of free telephone support unless you purchased Apple Care Plus, then your telephone support is extended to three years.

It does sound hollow, but it's more the way they designed it. The particular way they made the pad and the underlying hardware, it just makes that sound. It may have something to do with the sheer size of it in a metal chassis. It does take some getting used to. The MBP is definitely not hollow at all, every square millimeter of the thing is packed with either electronics or battery. ^^

chscag: if you haven't experienced it, glide your finger over one. It has a sound like running your finger over an extremely thin piece of aluminum. Like you hear an echo of empty on the other side of it.
