iPhone 8+...The notification ding when receiving new texts is hit or miss. It was the same on the previous 6+. All of the setting are in place...just doesn't happen all of the time...same with the wife's 8+. I must be missing something...just not sure what it is.

Do you have notifications turned on for iMessage? Even without the audible sound, you should still be getting a visual on the screen of your iPhone.

You know I think I have this problem too but I've begun to doubt my hearing. I now have my SMS notifications set to the maximum number of repeat which is 10 but I still have "Persistant" notifications on which require a dismiss.

You can turn on “LED Flash for Alerts” in Settings > General > Accessibility.

Turning on the LED for alerts isn't going to help when the phone is in his pocket or his wife's handbag. I notice that with my phone (7+) I don't always get the ding sound for an incoming message. Usually though I'm in our home office in front of the iMac so I do get the sound on the Mac.

When I'm at home being a potato, my phone is on the center console face up. Sometimes it dings. Another text within a few minutes will not notify at all. At first I thought it was just my phone...wifes' does the same thing. I've tried different settings on each phone to rule out it's the same settings. Might stop by the Apple Store and see what they have to say. If they have a definitive answer I'll let you guys know.

So is this a widespread phenomena because I always thought it was just because I couldn’t hear it due to background noise or because it was in my backpack in a different room or while riding my motorbike but maybe there’s nothing wrong with my hearing after all?

My wife claims I have selective hearing sometimes...but she doesn't 't get consistent dings either....
