Well to add to the fun - I received an email telling me I need to renew my subscription to Mac-Forums.com. Of course I can't as the link is inactive but it just provides one more point to just how inefficiently run our host is. But I bet when my "subscription" runs out I will have the ads back or my access will be removed????

Hey Lisa.....

Not to worry about your subscription as Nick and I will take care of it. Just send Nick and myself a certified check for the amount plus shipping, handling, sales tax, sports tax, local fees, and of course a hefty donation for our new iMac Pro machines. LOL!

Gotcha covered. ;D

You're good until 2021. (That is if the forums are still around then.)

Yikes! I would have to sell a kidney or something like that to pay that bill!

And thanks guys! Truly, I have no problems paying - the normal fee :Smirk: - if their pay system would work.

Is why nick and Charlie have black hats!

Simple Dennis.

With so many greenies about, the hat fits! Where I live in rural Australia they are known as tree huggers or koalas, after the bears who aren't bears but are a protected species.

I won't get started on some of the ridiculous things people come up with today. Sometimes I think common sense is something a lot of people missed out on.

I worked at a camp in my younger years that had a program to train kids to live off the land. The environmentalist was all about the great uses for Johnson Grass- hats, mats, hut material, livestock feed etc. What he failed to point out is it is illegal to raise it in our state as it is a noxious weed that spreads like wildfire and takes over choking out desirable species. But he was all about the green! ;D

If you can find that environmentalist send him this way. There are some local farmers who would probably love to give him some first-hand experience with an environmentally friendly, method of manually removing as much of this weed as he wants.:)

I guess the state government of Colorado thinks otherwise. Not only is "weed" legal there but Denver just passed an ordinance saying that new commercial roofs have to be living roofs. That's right, a roof with soil, plants, watering, and so forth. The environmentalists are taking over.

I had never heard of Johnson Grass but see it's a real problem in some areas, especially in parts of the US, but luckily the norther Canada cold keeps it limited and under control:

But hey, maybe some of that cold and snow that got to some southern areas may help do some control. Some good aspects of Mother Nature hopefully.

Unfortunately, most environmentalist will not look at the whole picture and come up with solutions to blend. This includes all the farm agencies I have to deal with. Their way or the highway and it better be with their approval!

My husband and I have a different philosophy. We have never taken government money for any part of our farming operations. If you have ever seen what hoops they make you jump through you would understand why. And in order to cash in to any of it you have tons of paper work to provide every year plus inspections - if needed - to go through every year or so. We decided just keeping up with the mandatory paperwork was bad enough.

So several years back we decided to put in a prairie grass field in an area located in a flood plain. It would protect the ground and provide a wildlife area. Plus my husband is into protecting and feeding wildlife. Okay ... he also likes to provide his own hunting area. But we have always practice conservation using grass water ways, tile, ditching, minimal tillage etc. Well this year the government came up with a new form for our annual mandatory CAUV (Calculated Agricultural Use Value) submission.

Our local farm bureau won a lawsuit to require our county auditors to re-evaluate farm ground. In the past they taxed woods, roads, waste ground - whatever that is - and any set a side for conservation areas as prime farm ground. Unfortunately if you put land into conservation WITHOUT their approval and have the paperwork to prove it, you can not claim it as set a side for conservation. Obviously, we are not smart enough to see it floods and take steps to protect it plus we are not getting government money to do it so they cannot control it.

Now if we had gotten approval and had the government pay for the cost and had it inspected then we could. But we also would have to sign a contract to maintain it for a set number of years - 10 is an average. Plus they can dictate if they decide they need more corn ground then you will be planting it in corn. Oh, and if they want they can pay us in commodities instead of actual cash. So we could get corn or soybeans instead. Yes, I real all contracts! So all our conservation ground is taxed as prime farm ground. Just my little piece of rebellion. :D

And yes, I know I am ranting. The USDA survey just arrived - all bazillion pages of it - and you would not believe what they ask! On the front is the standard "you MUST fill this out or else" statement. Really?

You paint a completely different picture of what most images of Ohio tend to show and they really don't show much of the agricultural side even though I gather there's a fair bit of it.

But besides your crazy governments methods, most of which we don't and can't understand, is how on Earth they describe Ohio as a midwestern U.S. state when clearly it shows to be right in the middle of the Eastern half of the U.S.

It seems to me that they're a bit mixed up with their geography as well as their land use.

PS: Good luck with your bazillion pages USDA survey. And just think of the poor soul who may have to read it!!! Oh yes, and then there must be the enforcers!!! :Not-Amused:

Yes, Ohio has a lot of agriculture. We are the largest producers of hot house tomatoes in the U.S. and in my area pork is the big thing. We mainly rent out our ground except for the hay and anything my husband wants to plant - like prairie grass. So answering a ton of questions on what each acre is used for or planted in or set a side for (please attach government approved paper work) and etc.... Just so some person will have a job inputting all this into a database for only the government knows what for.... well, it gets old. Kind of like me!

Ohio is considered mid-west because 200 years ago that is what they called it. The Mississippi River was the divider. Anything west of the Mississippi was the west and anything to the east of it was the mid-west. There is a bunch more history to it but that is a snap shot of how it came about.

Thanks Lisa,
I had figured it was something like that, but I'm really quite surprised that they haven't updated their geographical position to fit even the 20th Century!!! Things change folks!! :D

PS: What geographical description do they give to the actual Western States???? Other than the "Left Coast" or ????
