I'd like to put my iMac in a suitcase I could take with me onto Hawaiian Airlines when I move to Las Vegas. Airlines limit is 62", H+W+L. My iMac is about 26 inches wide and 21" high with the stand. Do you know if the stand can be removed? Or should I just FEDEXE it? Pete

I vote for FEDEX. And make sure it's insured for replacement value. It's too big for carry-on, and the handlers will be pretty rough for it in the cargo hold. Get FEDEX to box it for you properly, you'll have a better shot at it actually arriving in one piece.

I 1000% agree with Jake...FEDEX it. Like Jake mentioned...baggage handlers are absolutely aweful (have you ever seen damaged luggage...yes...all the time). Fed Ex very likely would have been the way this iMac would have been shipped if it was purchased online. Go with Fed Ex all the way.:)

You need to be aware that a proper shipping box for a 27" iMac is expensive. There are several on line companies that sell them. I recently inquired about a shipping box and was surprised to learn that the cost was $60.00. Unless I'm mistaken, neither FedEx or UPS will provide the proper shipping container - they leave that up to you. And the cost to ship a 31 LB Mac plus insurance is around $50 to $60.

I shipped a 21.5" iMac to my son in Atlanta. (Fort Worth to Atlanta) I had a box made locally (UPS and FedEx would not provide one) for $20.00. UPS charged me $50.00 to ship it plus the cost of replacement insurance.

Also, the stand can not be removed from the iMac without completely disassembling it. In other words, you have to remove the display and the logic board to get at the fasteners to remove the stand.

Want some advice? Sell the iMac before you leave and buy a new one when you get to Vegas. Who knows? Maybe you'll get lucky in Vegas and win a jackpot that will pay for the new iMac. :)

I almost forgot.... you're in Hawaii. Prices are going to be even higher for shipping stuff to the mainland unless you use sea freight which will take a month or more to arrive.

I'll 3rd the use of FEDEX/UPS to get your unit to the mainland. The original box the iMac came in would be perfect for this, if you don't have that, perhaps you can see if someone does.

On a totally unrelated note, why would you want to move from paradise to sin city? :) Most people would kill to go in the opposite direction.

Those prices sure add up Charlie. Still wouldn't trust airline baggage handlers. Bunch of animals they are. I swear they take bet's on how many suitcases they can damage in one day. And if they see a nice new "shiney" hardshell suitcase...they prbably say..."This thing needs to be initiated." BAMM goes the new suitcase on the ground...now it's a veteran!;)

Folks do sell original Apple boxes on e-Bay...but they usually aren't cheap.

Yeah Jake...I've read a bunch of those stories about how the airlines force some folks with very valuable musical instruments to check them...and they end up destroyed!:(

The only way you're going to get an original box the iMac came in is if Apple shipped it to you direct and you saved the box. Even if you have a brand new iMac shipped to your local Apple store for pickup, you do not receive it in the original shipping box. The store removes the original box and you're left with the show box that has the carry handle.

If it was my choice, I would never leave. But i'm approaching 74 and my wife would be totally lost if I passed away over here. I have electronic test equipment, electronic gadgets, a table saw, miter saw, drill press, routers and portable and non portable tools I've bought an accumulated over the years. You name it, I probably have it. My wife uses a windows laptop mainly for shopping. She is challenged by the remote control. She would not have a clue as to how to dispose of it or what to ship. I'm not good at garage sales and have put some stuff up on Craig's list but not much response so i'll probably just ship it with me. I have a home in Henderson where my daughter lives. My sister and brother-in-law and three of my nephews also live in Las Vegas. My daughter could help my wife dispose of my things without the rush of moving. Plus, the new home has a two car garage and a separate single car garage I plan to use as a workshop. But, the myth of Hawaii being expensive and Vegas being cheaper goes only so far. You do get much more home for much less money in Vegas then Hawaii. But my property taxes will go from $2655 to $6400. My medical insurance will increase From $332 to $555 per month, with less coverage. My auto insurance for two cars in Hawaii is $527 every six months. It will be about double in Vegas. My electric bill in Hawaii is about $20 a month because I have 20 solar panels on my roof, and a heat pump water heater. All electric house. Almost all LEDs. No need to heat during winter. I will have to pay a gas bill for heating. Higher electric bill, need for warmer clothes. Also sales (excise) tax on Oahu is 4.5%. It is 8.25% in Vegas, but no tax on food there. Groceries should be cheaper. We won't see "only within the continental US" when trying to buy stuff online. Shipping should be mostly free when ordering online. Home fire insurance is about $1000 less because there are no potential hurricanes in Vegas. Plus we have an idiot for a governor over here who stated some months back retesting sirens to warn of a North Korean missile attack, making people apprehensive, and that escalated yesterday when another idiot pressed the wrong button. Of course even in Vegas, I'll still have to deal with that other idiot in the White house who plays "Dare, Double Dare" with the other idiot in North Korea, which to a large extent helped escalate the local idiots into yesterdays debacle. Truly, we are governed by idiots.

I understand where you're coming from. Having lived in both places (Hawaii for 8 years and Las Vegas for 3 years) I would much prefer Hawaii. Of course for me it was easy because in both places I worked for the US Govt so all my shipping of goods was at Uncle Sam's expense. I'm now retired from Govt service and living in Texas where property taxes are fairly high and we too have a local sales tax of 8.5% depending on which county you live in. However, home prices and prices of everything else is lower than Nevada or Hawaii. Lousy climate here but not as bad as Las Vegas.

I would have loved to retire in Hawaii but the cost of a single dwelling home on land (in Ohau close to Honolulu) that was fee simple (you understand that) was outrageous. Lots of good things about Hawaii but also lots of not so good. By the way, I sent my son to a private school in Henderson while we were living in Las Vegas.

Good luck with your move and I hope you enjoy your new home and surroundings in the Vegas area.

Was it close to the Hooters Casino Hotel??? One could probably learn a lot there!! :Blushing:

PS: I've never been close to Vegas, just for full disclosure.

For mine this is one of the important reasons of buying Macs from Apple Online, the shipping case. Plus of course the 60 mile each way journey to a Reseller more interested in moving HP stock.

Update. I am somewhat settled in Vegas. I did ship my iMac with a FEDEX affiliated store. I also insured it for 2k as I have 20GB Ram installed.
My Mac did sustain some damage, but it still works, for now. The top right of the screen is cracked. There are two dents about an inch down and on top right corner.
The cracked glass screen s about 3/16" above the aluminum body on the top right, due to in being smashed in.
The offset of the screen from the body (on the top) starts from about midway and slowly get wider until the end.
I have contacted the shipper who requested I send pics of the packing box and bubble wrap and poly pellets to show FEDEX she packed correctly. Also took pics of cracked screen. Checked back and she said FEDEX needed additional info so she resent all the pics I provided. This morning took close up picks of the damage and forwarded to her. She wants FEDEX to pay as she feels it was packed adequately. Of course FEDEX would prefer she pay. Hope this gets settled before I die. Pete

Sorry to hear that Pete. Hopefully the "blame game" doesn't get too serious.

Thanks for the update.:)

Sorry to hear about the iMac. However, I'm sure that FedEx will make it good. The glass on your model is glued to the screen so there really is no way to just replace one part without the other. In other words, the entire display assembly must be replaced.

You're about a month away from when the heat starts to get intense there in Vegas. Hope you have good aircon in your home. ;)

Maybe the heat will get to the glue and the cracked glass will just ooze off onto the desk making the repair easier.

PS: But one would think such a piece would be handled properly if it was labelled properly regardless of how it was packed.

Just a thought… and in some dreamland …

When I shipped my 2013 27" iMac to my son in Atlanta I used the same double packing box that the 2017 iMac 27" came in. I used additional bubble wrap inside with the foamite material supplied by Apple. I sent it UPS ground and insured it for the same value that like units were selling for on eBay. It arrived at his door without a scratch on it. Wasn't cheap to ship it as the cost was around $60.00. But since my son gifted the 2017 iMac to us, it was worth it. :) The 2013 iMac will go to my youngest grand daughter.

As for Pete's iMac, it traveled a long way. I don't know if FedEx used air or sea travel but it had to go over 2000 miles and was probably handled many times during the trip. Regardless though, it should have not been damaged. Hopefully Pete will get a new iMac out of FedEx.
