Sleep Wake Failure: Mac reboots once per day, same time!

Help! My late 2012 iMac, with High Sierra installed, is rebooting every day around the same time. Generally I'll wake it up after breakfast, do some work, put it to sleep and come back around lunchtime to find it has rebooted with an error message saying it has suffered a Sleep Wake Failure. Apple haven't been too helpful, taking me thru all the usual SMC / clean disk stuff but not really wanting to address the long diagnostic that comes with the error message, and they say the next step is to reinstall high Sierra. But I don't think that is going to help, as High Sierra and the Mac in general is working just fine the rest of the day. Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum.

The "long diagnostic" you referred this probably the kernel panic report from the crash. It might help us to see if there is anything obvious in it. But I suspect the solution is going to be to reinstall HS. In the meantime you might try starting in Safe Mode and see if that doesn't crash, which would point to something you have installed on the iMac, not the OS itself. But SafeMode is not very fast or (IMHO) useful, so if you NEED the iMac, pick a day you don't need it as much.

If you want to post the panic report here, we might see something in it worth mentioning.

And what third party "helper" applications do you have installed? (Optimizers, cleaners, antivirus, boosters, etc, etc, etc) Most of them are not needed and can cause issues of all sorts.

A "Sleep Wake Failure" error does not generate a kernel panic report but will be noted in your logs. I have had that very same thing happen after a security update to High Sierra and it also prevented my iMac from going to sleep. However, the error only occurred one time not every day. The only cure I found was to reset the SMC. Give that a try and make sure you have the latest High Sierra update installed. (10.13.1)

Anything useful for a solution here???:

macOS Sierra: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH25498?locale=en_US

I'd also double check any sleep options or disable any that might be set in Energy Saver System Prefs.

That particular KB article is referring to a kernel panic report. Usually, a "Sleep Wake Failure" error does not generate a KP but it will show up in the logs. I know when it happened to my iMac I tried everything to return the iMac to its normal sleep wake energy preference. Eventually a SMC reset fixed it. However, if I remember correctly I kept the machine off and removed from AC power all night.

But a log file, unless he went there through Console, would not be his "long diagnostic that comes with the error message." My reason for calling it a kernel panic was that it sort of fitted what he said he was seeing. Bottom line, if he has a "long diagnostic" it would still be helpful to let us see it to be able to see what it is and what it is saying.

As I stated above, a "Sleep Wake Failure" does not generate a kernel panic report but does make a log entry. And you can see from the log entry you posted, that it's useless. I have no idea what causes a "Sleep Wake Failure" to occur but suspect it has to do with a momentary glitch in memory or firmware. I know that it took some time for my iMac to get back to normal after it happened to me. Usually, a SMC reset fixes it. You can try reinstalling High Sierra if you wish but I'm not sure that will solve it especially if it's something that got messed up in memory or the firmware.

Help! My late 2012 iMac, with High Sierra installed, is rebooting every day around the same time.

I guess it would be silly of me to suggest checking the System Preferences > Energy Saver > Schedule in case it has perhaps ended up being set to close to the same time for both sleep and wake time would it???

That would be embarrassing if they were both set to close to the same time eh???

Anything is possible Patrick. However, I would think that Apple support walked him through those settings to make sure. Never know though. I know when it happened to me, my Energy Saver settings had not been changed.

I did think it was something stupid like that, but nothing is scheduled and anyway its a full reboot rather than just going to sleep

sadly, you were right about HS reinstall - did that yesterday and today same problem. Question: some people have suggested that a SMC reset would have more chance of success if the mac is unplugged for many hours rather than the short time suggested by Apple - is that possible??

Bummer on the HS reinstall, but I've never really found doing so to be a solution for most vague type problems, and yes to your question and something that a local Mac tech guru would often do and suggest. He would also suggest leaving the MAC outside overnight as well as being completely unpowered.

Absolutely no real known reason as to why it would often work, but not always 100% either, but no harm in trying.

Maybe the damp cooler (often cold) nights up our damper Pacific Coast West area helped any capacitors drain completely and more thoroughly. :D

BTW: Have you tried using and booting up in Safe Boot Mode to see if it still does the same thing. If not, I think I'd be inclined to try that first.

Next and final step would be to use an external drive and install a basic virgin HS system and boot and try using it and see what happens.

Personally, I'm still suspecting some odd software as the cause.

"Outside?" Seriously? I don't know about you, but I'm NOT leaving any computer outside overnight, unless I want them gone!

Go ahead and try the SMC reset by leaving your iMac off and unplugged for several hours. As I stated above, I really am not sure what cured it for me but I was not seeing the constant reboots that you're experiencing. Let's hope that it's nothing to do with hardware. Keep us posted.

I guess it bipeds on where one lives, so maybe inside an unheated garage that's lockable???? And maybe covered with a black cloth or out of site from any window.

BTW: Is your Winchester, VA location where the nice guns come from, or did????

Good persuaders and discouragers I'm told if used properly!!! ;-)

Nope, all we have is apples. We are an apple-growing area. In the northern end of Shenandoah Valley.

Sounds nice Jake, and I have to take a look with Google Maps/Earth.

Sort of how a lot of the agricultural land around here used to be used until the demand for housing took over most of it. :|
