I have all my music in my iTunes library on my iMac.
Whenever I add to the library I sync it to my iPhone.
So far so good.
Last week I added some tracks direct to my iphone, bypassing library and iTunes.
The tracks were flac format and done by some piece of software that meant could be played by my iphone.
Later on I added some tracks to my library and synced as usual.
Now the tracks I added directly are nowhere to be seen.
Are they lost forever or can I retreive them?

I don't know if they're lost forever, however, when you synced your library again to the phone it removed those tracks that you added to the iPhone without going through iTunes. In the future if you wish to add tracks to your phone and not use iTunes, you're going to need to use a third party application like "iMazing 2". It's currently on sale, so you might want to take a look at it and see if it meets your needs.

As for the tracks that disappeared, there are apps that can undelete them from your iPhone if they have not been overwritten. Do some searching.
