I like many of you have several vintage machines that still work, but have been deemed obsolete. I'm interested in buying a desktop. I'd like to know the clouds thoughts on buying a new machine over a gently used 2011 model. The aim is to keep the budget below $1500. Its intended for use as audio/video editing terminal using a CS cloud subscription. I know my '11 MacBook Pro can be a finicky fellow. Do the same pitfalls exist with a desktop? I actually have an '11 desktop at work and its never done me wrong. Is that unique?

Not exactly sure where you are located. But if in North America...unless you would be purchasing a loaded 2011 Mac Pro desktop...you shouldn't be spending anywhere near $1500 for it.

If I had $1500 to spend...I would be purchasing a MUCH newer model. There are actually many brand new model Apple computers that cost $1500 or less. And then there's the Apple refurbished area to consider.

Many 2011 model Apple computer's can be had for $500 or less. If you were REALLY interested in a 2011 computer...I wouldn't spend more than $400-$500 (and that's only if you were considering a 2011 27" iMac...more if you're talking a Mac Pro desktop).

Too old and old technology.

The 2011 models have been left behind with slow, old graphic cards, check Google for problems with failing cards, as a rule of thumb came with 7200rpm platter drives, and most crippling, USB2. For $1,500 you should be looking at a 2015 model from Apple Refurbished.

Found a '17 refurb in budget. And I'd be that much further from the inevitable obsolescence.
