iMovie - upgrading....

... from iMovie 11 (version 9.0) What I would really like to know from users of version 10.1.6, is simply, is the upgrade worthwhile and does the program overwrite the previous version?

I currently use version 9.0 and in addition iMovie HD (this is vital!)
So from you guys who have experience, can you please let me know the practical advantages of the upgrade? And of course, the disadvantages.


My machine is a mid 2011 iMac running Mavericks. Having got my head around the OS, I really don't want to upgrade the OS. In addition, I don't wish to make some other programs unusable....

I can't tell you if the upgrade is worth it or not because I don't use the app. However, both versions can co-exist together. I have both versions in my Applications folder and can open and use either one if I desire.

However, before you upgrade you should make a backup.

I would say stick with iMovie11, especially if you Share to iDVD. v10 doesn't have this capability. It's not impossible, you just have to export from v10 as a movie file, and you can then add that to an iDVD Project. Also, v10 doesn't have Chapter Markers, which I used a lot for dvds.

I upgraded mainly because v9 would not display still photos in El Capitan, and my v9 kept crashing when I tried to Share as a movie. v10 has better support for importing AVCHD files, but apart from that I can't think of an overwhelming reason to upgrade.

Thanks chscag and MightyGem for your replies. Apologies for the delay in responding. Having considered it, I will stick with iMovie11. I do record some live music (Traditional Jazz) and having edited it all in iMovie, I post DVD's to the band of the finished result, so that's a deal breaker (as they say in Keller). Thanks again.
