how can i import an xmp sidecar into mac Photos

is Apple not even supporting their own formats?!?!
I want to move a photo from one Photos Library to another
1. I export unmodified original and click the side car (xmp metadata) button
2. I then exit Photos, restart it with holding down the Option Key so that I can open another Library
3. I import the photo and I see it there but without any meta da
ta!!

what am i doing wrong ?

also .. the bigger picture is that I simply want to be able to store all my photos and tags acrross a few Photos Libraries due to size and disk limits. is there a better way?

yes that is the method I use and I dont see the tags after importing.
the whole idea is to move a picture from one library to another without losing any quality or the tags that take so long to type in.
I should be able to export a picture and then import the picture and not lose anything. the tag data is clearly there in the side car .xmp file

OK, off to Google and I didn't read all the hits but it sounds like maybe some programmers need to go back to their drawing/programming board and get things fixed properly if this fits your case:

On Yosemite or El Capitan - even if you export the originals with XMP sidecar files to preserve the IPTC metadata, the metadata from the sidecar file will not be applied to the originals when reimporting. Your metadata will be gone, unless you export the edited versions as JPEGS.

thanks for digging that out. its amazing that a company as arrogant and funded as Apple doesnt even "support" their own product. its like they havent even thought about how users will manage their photo collection when it grows too big to fit into one file (ie library package). I suspect the real reason is that they deliberately have made the implementation of these features **** poor so that you spend money on their cloud storage. thats weak...

I dare say that what Apple provides is probably adequate for the average, normal photo user, but for anyone else with a large photo inventory I would suggest doing some searches for something else, and better.

I'm not a big photo user at all, in fact tiny would be a better description, but years ago there was a fantastic app, I think called multi or media something, but the price went trough the roof and I think it has now disappeared. Sorry, but a seniors moment prevents me from recalling its name but I think it may have been pre OS X as well. More brain farts here!!

So do some web searching for alternatives maybe…???

You're welcome. and my brain fart passed and I'm sure the old software that worked well for large photo collections etc. was iView MediaPro, but it seems to have been taken over with a replacement now called just Media Pro, but doesn't seem to have glowing user reports:
